Alicia Eugenia Rivera

Alicia Eugenia Rivera, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and matriarch, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at Englewood Hospital in Englewood, New Jersey. She was 84 years old.

Born on November 3, 1940, in Guayaquil, Ecuador, Alicia was the cherished daughter of Raquel Bejarano and Segundo Alvarado, and the proud granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alvarado. From her earliest days, Alicia radiated warmth, strength, and a deep devotion to family.

In her youth, Alicia met her childhood sweetheart and neighbor, Alfonso Rivera. Their love story began across the street and blossomed into a beautiful, lifelong partnership. They married in 1959 and shared an inspiring 63-year journey built on love, mutual respect, and unwavering support. Together, they raised two children, Luz (Lucy) and Javier (Rick), and created a home filled with laughter, generosity, and tradition.

In 1961, Alicia and Alfonso courageously moved to the United States in pursuit of a better life for their family. They initially settled in Queens, New York, where Alicia worked diligently in a clothing factory. Even during those early years, her compassion and selflessness were evident. She would often bring home clothing and shoes to send back to her family and children in Ecuador, always thinking of others before herself. Her quiet acts of generosity reflected her deep devotion to loved ones, and her resilience laid the foundation for the life her family would build in their new country.

Eventually settling in Bergenfield, New Jersey, in 1972, Alicia became a cornerstone of her community and home. She was a devoted homemaker, tireless supporter of her husband’s professional endeavors, and a nurturing mother and grandmother. Her strength, compassion, and wisdom made her the heart of the family.

Alicia was known for her boundless energy and zest for life. A true social butterfly, she loved dancing, cooking, watching her “novelas” soap operas, traveling, and hosting vibrant gatherings where everyone felt welcome. Her passion for dominoes with close friends, getting dressed up for any occasion, and celebrating life's moments big and small made her unforgettable to all who knew her.

Above all, Alicia took immense pride in her role as a grandmother. Helping to raise her five grandchildren brought her profound joy and purpose, and she poured her heart into every moment she shared with them. Her legacy of love lives on in each of them and in her great-grandchildren as well.

She is survived by her loving sister, Leonor Elva Avarado Bejarano, her loving brother Arturo Angel Alvarado Bejarano, her devoted children, Luz Rivera and Javier Rivera; her five adored grandchildren—James, Daniella, Christina, Christopher, and Jovan; and her precious great-grandchildren—Xavier, Mya, Nikko, Penelope, Camila, Caylee, Luca, and Sienna. She is also survived by extended family members and countless friends who will remember her vibrant spirit and generous soul.

Alicia Eugenia Rivera leaves behind a legacy of enduring love, resilience, and grace. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Visiting will be held at Riewerts Memorial Home from 4pm-7pm on Thursday, June 12, 2025 with a funeral service at 6:30pm.

Nacida el 3 de noviembre de 1940 en Guayaquil, Ecuador, Alicia fue la querida hija de Raquel Bejarano y Segundo Alvarado, y la orgullosa nieta del Sr. y la Sra. Alvarado. Desde su infancia, Alicia irradiaba calidez, fortaleza y una profunda devoción a la familia.

En su juventud, Alicia conoció a su amor de la infancia y vecino, Alfonso Rivera. Su historia de amor comenzó al otro lado de la calle y floreció en una hermosa unión para toda la vida. Se casaron en 1959 y compartieron una inspiradora trayectoria de 63 años basada en el amor, el respeto mutuo y el apoyo incondicional. Juntos, criaron a sus dos hijos, Luz (Lucy) y Javier (Rick), y crearon un hogar lleno de alegría, generosidad y tradición.

En 1961, Alicia y Alfonso se mudaron valientemente a Estados Unidos en busca de una vida mejor para su familia. Inicialmente se establecieron en Queens, Nueva York, donde Alicia trabajó diligentemente en una fábrica de ropa. Incluso durante esos primeros años, su compasión y altruismo eran evidentes. A menudo traía ropa y zapatos a casa para enviarlos a su familia e hijos en Ecuador, pensando siempre en los demás antes que en sí misma. Sus discretos actos de generosidad reflejaban su profunda devoción a sus seres queridos, y su resiliencia sentó las bases de la vida que su familia construiría en su nuevo país.

Tras establecerse fi nalmente en Bergenfi eld, Nueva Jersey, en 1972, Alicia se convirtió en un pilar fundamental de su comunidad y hogar. Fue una dedicada ama de casa, una incansable defensora de los proyectos profesionales de su esposo y una madre y abuela cariñosa. Su fuerza, compasión y sabiduría la convirtieron en el alma de la familia.

Alicia era conocida por su energía desbordante y entusiasmo por la vida. Siendo una auténtica mariposa social, le encantaba bailar, cocinar, viendo sus novelas, viajar y organizar animadas reuniones donde todos se sentían bienvenidos. Su pasión por el juego de dominó con amigos cercanos, por arreglarse para cualquier ocasión y por celebrar los momentos grandes y pequeños de la vida la hicieron inolvidable para todos los que la conocieron.

Sobre todo, Alicia estaba inmensamente orgullosa de su papel de abuela. Ayudar a criar a sus cinco nietos le brindó una profunda alegría y un propósito, y se entregó con todo su corazón a cada momento que compartió con ellos. Su legado de amor perdura en cada uno de ellos y también en sus bisnietos. Le sobreviven su querida hermana, Leonor Elva Avarado Bejarano; su querido hermano, Arturo Ángel Alvarado Bejarano; sus devotos hijos, Luz Rivera y Javier Rivera; sus cinco adorados nietos: James, Daniella, Christina, Christopher y Jovan; y sus queridos bisnietos: Xavier, Mya, Nikko, Penélope, Camila, Caylee, Luca y Sienna. También le sobreviven sus familiares e innumerables amigos que recordarán su espíritu vibrante y su alma generosa.

Alicia Eugenia Rivera deja un legado de amor perdurable, resiliencia y gracia. La extrañaremos profundamente y la recordaremos por siempre.

El velatorio se realizará en el Hogar Conmemorativo Riewerts de 16:00 a 19:00 h el jueves 12 de junio de 2025, con el servicio fúnebre a las 18:30 h.
