Arthur E. Essman, known to everyone as Artie, a lifelong resident of Bergenfield and a dedicated public servant, passed away on January 2, 2026, at the age of 73. Born in Englewood, NJ, on September 15, 1952, Artie built a life defined by loyalty, hard work, and a deep investment in his community.
Artie was a pillar of Bergenfield for decades. In addition to his long career as a manager at Stop & Shop, he served as an Auxiliary Police Officer for over 30 years. His impact on local youth was equally significant; he was a longtime P.A.L. basketball coach, continuing to mentor and lead teams for years after his own son had finished playing.
An enthusiast of motorcycles and muscle cars, Artie also possessed a deep passion for hockey. He was notoriously superstitious about his seating during games—a quirk that became a beloved part of family lore. Regardless of the setting or the temperature, Artie remained true to his signature style, famously sporting his flannel and black pants even on visits to the Texas heat.
Artie is survived by his beloved wife, Toni; his children, James (Natalie) and Rosemary; and his cherished grandchildren, James Carlos, Isla, and Lilliana. He is also survived by his mother, Rita; his sisters, Diane, Sharon, Jeanne, and Joanne; and his in-laws, Vinny (Nilda), and Cathy. He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur H. Essman; his brother, Thomas; and his brother-in-law, Vito Moncello.
Artie will be remembered as a man of steady character and quiet strength. He leaves behind a legacy of service and a family who will forever miss his reliable presence and dedicated heart.
