Charles Jim O'Dowd

Charles J. O'Dowd, Jr. peacefully passed away on January 19, 2018 at the age of 90, surrounded by family. Born in Tappan, NY, he moved to Bergenfield in 1938. He was married to the former Ruth Wright for 60 years until her death in 2008. He was a WWII Army veteran, a master plumber who owned his own plumbing/contracting business, and enjoyed a long career in local and county politics, to include 4 terms as mayor of Bergenfield (one of the longest serving mayors in Bergenfield history), and served as a Bergen County Freeholder, including a term as Freeholder Chairman. After retirement, he served as a Sergeant at Arms for the NJ State Senate. He was highly esteemed by the Bergenfield Public Library and named Trustee Emeritus, as well as a member of the New Jersey State Library Board. He was a dedicated long time Bergenfield Little League volunteer. He was an avid gardener and long-term member of the Bergenfield Garden Club. He is survived by his five children, David (Rhonda), Nancy Bruscino (Michael), Betsy O'Dowd, Patricia Pucarelli (Fred), Michael (Lucia). He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren and five great-children. Reposing, Riewerts Memorial Home, on Sunday 7-9 pm, Monday 2-4 pm, 7-9 pm. Service at Riewerts at 10 am Tuesday, burial to follow at George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Bergenfield Public Library are appreciated.
