Edmund W. Leopold, 107, of Bergenfield, NJ, passed away on November 24, 2023. Devoted husband of the late Elenora C. Leopold. Beloved father of Melanie and Debra Leopold. Brother of the late John, Harold, and Milton Leopold, and Mathilda Johnson. Born in Hell’s Kitchen in Manhattan, Ed moved to Bergenfield when he was seven years old and graduated from Tenafly High School in 1935. Working after school at the local hardware store (Dembitz Hardware) sparked his life-long interest in tools, and led to many home improvement and remodeling projects. He also gained an extensive knowledge of fruits and vegetables while working in the local produce store. Ed began his military career while still in high school, attending The Citizen’s Military Training Corp at Fort Dix. He later completed extensive course work and was awarded a commission as Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. From 1939 to 1941 Ed was a Camp Commander with the Civilian Conservation Corps. At the start of WWII Ed reported to Colonel Norman H. Schwartzkopf and joined the Regiment that helped secure the Atlantic Coastline. He was a lifetime Army Reservist and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. After WWII Ed worked in logistical support in the chemical and machine industries. He worked for Woodridge Chemical Company, FW Berk, and retired from FLSmidth in 1980. In retirement, Ed and his wife travelled throughout the US, Europe and Asia. Ed was a member of St. Matthew’s Church since 1926, confirmed and married there, and served as an officer on the church council. He was recently celebrated for his 80 years of service to the Free Masons, Franklin Lodge No. 12. In lieu of the flowers the family requests donations be made to Bergenfield Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Inc. (www.bergenfieldambulance.org). Visiting at Riewerts Memorial Home, 187 So. Washington Ave., Bergenfield on Tuesday 2-6 PM. Funeral service at the funeral home on Wednesday at 10AM. Interment George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus.
