Floyd W Flathman

October 7, 1925 — January 11, 2015

FLATHMAN, Floyd W. died Sunday January 11, 2015. He was born in Woodhaven, Queens on October 7, 1925. He was a World War II veteran and fought in the Battle of the Bulge which he was very quiet about, but proud of. He received a bachelor's degree from NYU and had his Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering. Over his career he worked for Norcross, Westinghouse, Becton-Dickinson Pharmaceutical Company. His last position was with Ciba Geigy, a Swiss Pharmaceutical Corporation, in Suffern, NY where he was part of the Research and Development Team that created the first Transdermal Patch which was developed originally for heart patients to deliver nitroglycerin via skin and not orally. He worked many years on this project developing the machinery to marry the adhesive and medicine into a patch for the skin. He was very proud of his teams achievements. Floyd also taught Mechanical Engineering course every Monday evening for 10 years at New Jersey Institute of Technology. In June 1961 Floyd married Carol Helen Speckman. Upon his death they were married 52 years and he was a dedicated husband and loved his bride. He and Carol have two children who they love very much, Scot Floyd of Reseda, CA and Elena Carol, of Briarcliff Manor, NY. Floyd loved and was tremendously proud of his grandsons, Benjamin (16) and Joshua(13). They will miss their Grandpa. He loved and was proud of his son-in-law Uve Kupka of Scarborough, NY, his nephews Robert and Ronald Lipori, grand nephew Robert Lipori Jr. and honorary daughter Laurel Lipori of Miller Place, NY. He is survived by his sister Joan Van Wert and her husband Wally, in Ormond Beach, Florida. He lived in Bergenfield for 50 years and though he was from Queens, happily settled down to life here in Bergenfield. Floyd was one of the original trustees of the Bergenfield Swim Club. He believed in the club and the fun and memories it offered the families of the town. He loved to swim and did so everyday with his wife. He was a member of the Golden Age Club and enjoyed the luncheon and outings with his wife. And during their heyday, he and Carol loved to square dance and were very active doing so throughout Bergen County. Funeral service at Riewerts Memorial Home, 187 S.
