John P. Brennan

John Patrick Brennan, of Cresskill and Dumont, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2025.

He is survived by his wife, Leslie, and sons, James (Liz) and John (Katie); his parents, Margaret and Patrick; his sisters, Patricia (John) and Mary (Bob); his brothers, Joseph (Ann) and Patrick (Annette); many beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews; as well as his dog, Lola. He joins his brother, Vincent, and his in-laws, Kathleen and Allen Riley.

John was born in the Bronx on November 10, 1961. He moved with his family to Bergenfield in 1976. John attended Bergenfield High School, where he was a member of the marching band.

After graduating, John attended NJIT as a first-generation college student. Following college, he worked at the New York Stock Exchange as a licensed floor broker for many years.

John was a loving father and husband. He married his wife, Leslie, on September 1, 1991. Their older son, James, was born in March 1995, and their younger son, John, was born in January 1998.

John was a dedicated community leader. He proudly served as a Councilman in Cresskill from 2006 to 2013. During his tenure, he served as liaison to the town’s fire department, EMS services, public pool, department of public works, library, recreation services, and department of senior citizens. He was Cresskill’s police commissioner from 2009 to 2013 and council president in 2009. He also served on Cresskill’s Zoning Board from 2001 to 2007 and the Planning Board from 2006 to 2013. During John’s time in local government, Cresskill achieved several key accomplishments, including the construction of the town’s Recreation Center.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4–8 p.m. at Riewerts Memorial Home, 187 South Washington Avenue, Bergenfield. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church, Bergenfield, on Wednesday at 10 a.m.
