Listen to Obituary

John Edward McGill was born on March 18th 1947. His parents Joseph and Louise bought their home in Bergenfield on April 18th of the same year. Nearly 79 years later, John remained a proud lifelong Bergenfield resident.

John grew up spending his time exploring nature in Bergenfield and developed a special enthusiasm for reptiles and amphibians and particularly turtles. He loved being outdoors and loved animals of all types.

John attended catholic school and graduated St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale NJ in 1966. After high school, John enlisted in the Army in 1966 and was stationed in Thailand until he was honorably discharged in 1969. John was extremely proud to be a veteran and was active in a number of veteran’s organizations until his death.

When John came home from the war he followed in his father’s footsteps and in 1970 became a union electrician with the IBEW Electricians union local #164.

In his free time, John loved all types of music and was an avid collector of records and music memorabilia. He also loved the NY Yankees.

John was a very accomplished runner and a long-time member of the North Jersey Masters Running Club. He ran well over 1000 road races including 34 full marathons, and qualified for the Boston Marathon.

Much of John’s adult life revolved around his relationship with St. John’s parish where he joined the Knights of Columbus on November 11th 2003. In the KOC he found fellowship and community with brothers who shared his love of Jesus Christ. He also shared his faith in Cornerstone Retreats.

John loved to laugh, he was a generous and kind soul who will be missed by all who were blessed to know him.
