Joseph F. Hartney

July 28, 1922 — February 2, 2015

Joseph Hartney, 92, a long-time resident of New Milford, died peacefully on February 1, 2015. The son of Frank and Catherine Hartney, Joe was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy and second wife, Edith and his brother Thomas. Father of Peter and his wife Mary Anne of Guilford Ct, and Patricia Byrne and her husband, Jeff of Waldwick NJ. Cherished grandfather of Gregory Byrne and his wife Cait, Timothy Byrne and Meaghan and Gavin Hartney. Beloved brother of Howard, Edward, John, Helen, and Frances. Uncle to many nieces and nephews. A letter winner on the golf team, Joe graduated from St. John's University with an undergraduate degree in math. He served with distinction during WWII with the 3rd Army, declined Battlefield Commission, and returned home to pursue a law degree at St. John's. After graduation, he was hired as an attorney for the Aetna Insurance Company, where he worked for 37 years until his retirement. Joe was a founding parishioner of Ascension Church in New Milford and served as a lector, Eucharistic Minister, CCD teacher, and Parish Counsel member. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Nocturnal Adoration Society. Visiting on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9pm at Riewerts Memorial Home, 187 So. Washington Ave., Bergenfield. All will gather at the funeral home on Friday at 9:30am for the Funeral Mass at Church of the Ascension, New Milford at 10:30am. Entombment George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the St. Jude's Research Hospital.
