Joseph Louis Minervini, passed away at Mountainview Gardens, Pompton Plains, NJ on September 30, 2018. He was 90. Born in Jersey City, NJ in 1928, his family moved to Fairview in 1939. After graduating Cliffside Park High School he was drafted into the United States Airforce as a communications specialist. He was assigned to the United States Embassy, Lima, Peru as an instructor for the U.S. Airforce Mission to Peru at the Peruvian Cadet School. After receiving degrees from Manhattan College, William Paterson University, and Columbia University he began his teaching career at the Oradell Junior High School and after three years became a member of the Ridgewood public schools for 36 years. He is best remembered for his many contributions to the aquatic programs in Bergen County as Pool Manager of the Hackensack Golf Club, New Milford Swim Club and Teaneck Swim Club. He was the Co-founder of the New Jersey Managers Association and the Bergen County Swim Club Championships eventually involving over 4000 participants in the New Jersey Swim Club Championships. An avid biker he participated in many marathons earning thousands of dollars for organizations especially the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society. After retiring, he became Vice President of the Bergen County Retirees Education Association and then President for 6 years. He was a member of St. Maximilian Kolbe Church in Toms River, NJ and St. Josephs of New Milford, Oradell. In 2000 after moving to Holiday City West, Toms River, he was active as Second Vice President and Secretary of the H.C.W Members Club . He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Eleanore (nee Spitzer), in 2008. Surviving are his children Stephen and daughter-in-law Teresa DuBee, Carolynn Claus and her children, granddaughters Aimee Claus and April Claus, his brother Nick Minervini and sister-in-law Rose Minervini. He was predeceased by his sister Lucy Iannacone, nephews James Iannacone and Anthony Iannacone. Surviving are nephews Pat Minervini, Nick Minervini, Robert Gregory, and nieces Roseanne Iannaccone and Sharon Maes. Visitation at Riewerts Memorial Home, 187 S. Washington Ave., Bergenfield on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 from 4-8pm. All will meet Thursday at St. Joseph’s RC Church, 105 Harrison Street, Oradell for the funeral Mass at 10am.
