On February 10th, 2026 after his long battle with Cancer. He is now in the living hands of God with his parents, Benjamin and Dorothy Verga, his brother James Verga, and his beloved daughter Jill Tabor.
Joe was married to the love of his life Judith Verga. They started dating in 1963 and were married in 1967, married for 58 wonderful years. Joe was deeply loved by his family. Son Jeff and daughter-in-law Shana, son Joey and daughter-in-law Janet, and son-in-law Dan Tabor. He had 10 grandchildren that adored their Poppy. Jake, Zack, Connor, Cecelia, Joseph, Noah, Cole, Kianna, Aidan, and Kateri.
Joe was the cherished older brother to Edward, Isabelle, Lillian, Charles, and Dorothy. He also was endeared to his brothers and sisters in law, John and Kathy DeAngelis, Joyce DeAngelis, Betty Verga, and Karen Verga. He had many extended family and friends that were so dear to his heart.
As a teenager, Joe attended and Graduated from Don Bosco Prep. As far back as Grade School, Joe had an admiration for Saint Don Bosco and lived lis life in accordance with his teachings.
Joe also Graduated from NJIR with a Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering. In 1967 he volunteered for The United States Army and served until 1969. After that he joined Bell Atlantic (Verizon) until he retired in 2003. Joe loved his time working there and would talk about it with anyone that would listen.
After retiring, Joe worked as a general contractor with his son Joey until the very end of his life. Joe was very Patriotic and loved his country and town of Bergenfield. “Mr. Verga” (as he was known by many) was heavily involved in many organizations in town. Joe was the Cub Scout leader of pack 139 for almost 30 years.
For the last 20 years, Joe was an integral member and past President of the Bergenfield Lion’s Club. Joe was also a part of the town Environmental Club, as well as a member of St. John’s Knight’s of Columbus. Joe was a devoted parishioner is St. John’s RC Church. He taught CCD for over 50 years, was Chairman of the Carnival Committee, part of the RCIA, and a Eucharistic Minister. St. John’s was like his second home.
Joe also loved coaching his Boys and the rest of their teams In baseball, coaching the Pirates for 8 years.Joe had a deep love of his country and those that served, especially those that paid the ultimate sacrifice. For that reason, Joe has lead a team of volunteers to build a float in the Bergenfield Memorial Day Parade in all but one year since 1975.
When Joe did find time to relax, he loved going to his lake house in Vermont with his wife Judy. Over the years, many friends and family have spent quality time at the lake with Joe. He will be sorely missed by those that knew and loved him!
Visiting Monday February 16th 2-8 PM at Riewerts Memorial Home, 187 So. Washington Ave. Bergenfield. Funeral Mass at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church, Bergenfield Tuesday February 17th at 11 AM. Cremation will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Bergenfield Lions Club or St. Johns RC Church in Bergenfield.
