Mirta T. Acosta

July 24, 1932 — September 13, 2022

“What the heart has once known, it shall never forget.” On the evening of Tuesday, September 13, 2022, Mirta Acosta, 90, of Bergenfield passed away; and yet, the love she gave both freely and fiercely will be carried with us always- never to be forgotten.

Her life began on July 24, 1932 in Havana, Cuba where she lived until 1969 when she and her family immigrated to the United States. Mirta, or Mimi, as she was most affectionately known, was a light and a force. A Leo -as she would remind us, she truly had the heart of a lion and a strength of character to match. She was a fighter! She was kind, yet did not allow herself to be crossed. - tough as nails with the best hugs. A believer of superstitions yet a woman of unwavering faith.

Mimi’s presence was one of joyfulness. She had the incredible ability to connect to everyone who crossed her path. Everyone who knew her, thought of her as a friend. Mimi would make you a sandwich whether you were her grandchild or the utility worker who came to check the meter. She made people feel accepted and she did this effortlessly. She had an infectious smile and was truly the life of the party. Her singing and dancing were a staple at both family parties as well as on otherwise quiet, random afternoons at home.

She loved her family and felt most at home in the midst of others. Aside from being a social butterfly, she enjoyed watching the Yankees play, sewing, doing crossword puzzles, and of course shopping!

She was predeceased by her devoted husband of 64 years, Julio Acosta, as well as her loving sister Dalia Capote and brother-in-law Pedro Capote. Her memories will forever be held dear by her daughter Cristina Alvarez, son Julio T. Acosta, and son-in-law Luis Alvarez, her grandchildren, Arianna Bastidas and her husband Mark, Victoria Mazon and her husband Daniel, Alexandra Alvarez, Melissa Acosta and Eric Acosta, as well as her great grandchildren Charlotte and Olivia Bastidas & Xavier and Leo Mazon.

Visiting will be held Thursday, September 15th from 4-8 pm At Riewerts Memorial Home, 187 So. Washington Ave. Bergenfield and a Funeral Mass will be held the following morning at 10 am, Friday, September 16th at St. John The Evangelist R.C. Church, Bergenfield after which, Mirta will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband Julio at Garden of Memories Mausoleum in Washington Township, Bergen County, New Jersey
